Hey, imagine this! You are at your child care job in Hawaii and you get a call from Roger Neugebauer (the editor of this magazine) asking you to attend a conference on Intergenerational Programming in Holland and he offers to help subsidize your expenses. Well, this happened to me, and I think it points out at least one more reason to maintain my Child Care Information Exchange connection.


I had been talking with Roger about intergenerational programs for several years, beginning with a planning meeting in Anaheim for the first World Forum on Early Care and Education that was held in Honolulu.

This relatively new field of intergenerational studies brings forth numerous methods for linking young and old persons together and promoting mutually beneficial interaction. In countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, an extensive body of knowledge has resulted from years of research, program model development, training, and evaluation. Other countries are now looking at this new approach as a means of addressing their own aging population problems.
