Celebrating Children’s Books: The Questions that Matter

When my grandson Ryan was born, his three-year-old sister Caroline was in love. She hugged and kissed him, she snuggled with him, she shared her most cuddly toys with him. For about six weeks �" until she felt it was time to move on.

“When will Ryan go away?” she asked her mother.

“He’s part of our family now,” her mother explained.

“Where would he go?”

“Well,” said Caroline, “he could go where there are people who like him.”

He stayed, of course, and neither can imagine a time when they were without each other’s company.

We all have stories like this of children trying to put the pieces together to make sense of their very new lives. Theirs are important questions and we need to listen carefully. Books that ask questions and inspire discussion are important as well. Here are some new books that encourage kids to think about all kinds of things, from apples to world peace.
