Intentionality is a buzzword in early childhood education right now. It appears in workshop descriptions and book titles and is on the lips of many professionals. When we deconstruct this idea, at its core we find responsibility: as professionals, we want to make good choices that bring about desired consequences. We want our work with children to enhance and facilitate their growth and development in ways that contribute to their success in school and in life. Wouldn’t we also say that we want children to be intentional in their work? When they learn from us how to evaluate and make good choices and understand the consequences of their actions, we have taught them a lifelong skill that will serve them well. Responsibility is foundational to everything we teach in the early childhood classroom and it’s easy to teach.

Through the addition of activities to our daily class schedule, modeling acceptable behavior, and raising our expectations of what children can do, we can help children become more responsible.
