These tech tools enable early childhood professionals to connect with each other in new ways. When we use these tools effectively it really is “a small world after all.”

Tech Terms

• Synchronous: To take place at the same time �" chats and Webcasts require users to be online at the same time.

• Asynchronous: To take place separately �" discussion forums allow for anytime, anywhere access and participation.

• Discussion Forum: An asynchronous tool that organizes and groups comments into threads that contain a main posting and all related replies, to encourage participation and
interaction over a period of time.

• Chat: A synchronous tool that allows real-time interaction, such as having guest speakers or subject matter experts take questions, or enabling small groups to work together.

• Webcast: A method for broadcasting audio and video over the Internet using streaming video, slides, graphics, and captions with two-way interactivity through a chat and
e-mail. Can be archived for later access.
