As I stood in line at the checkout counter at the market, a mother, firmly holding her little girl's hand, came and stood behind me. She was talking to the little girl, saying, "You cannot scream and run around and make me chase you. You cannot hide and laugh when I find you. If you want to come to the market with me, you have to act civilized." The word civilized I'm sure had little meaning to the child but it was obvious from the expression on the child's face that she was getting the message that her behavior was not acceptable and if she wanted to go with her mother to the market she had better shape up.

I was sharing this incident with a friend who told me about the time she was in the market and was fascinated with a conversation a father seemed to be having with his young son who was sitting in the shopping cart and doing everything he could to gain his father's attention. The father was saying, "Take it easy, John. We are almost through. You are doing fine. Hold tight, John. Everything is going to be okay." My friend complimented the father on ...
