In recent years we've experienced four major crises. Each time, our director has risen to the challenge and never once lost her cool. The amazing thing is that, throughout all this trauma, she has protected the children and families. Our classrooms have remained safe, warm, exciting, joyful environments for children.This praise, devoted to one of the directors featured on the cover of this issue, spells out the challenge facing nearly all early childhood leaders. Centers today are buffeted with unprecedented financial, organizational, and societal challenges. Leaders in centers need to prevail over these threats while at the same time preserving a nurturing environment for children, parents, and teachers.
What is fortunate for our profession, and for our society, is that so many directors do rise to the challenge.
In this issue, we are honoring all these talented directors by highlighting the accomplishments of a few. The directors featured on the cover of this issue and in this article have been chosen from among the myriad of noteworthy nominees sent in by our readers. These Exceptional Directors have been singled out because of their skills in leading people, working with parents, developing programs, managing their organizations, and advocating for children.
