Do you have $2,600 to spare? That's what the average American will pay for health care in 1991. A family of four - the so-called typical family - will pay over $10,000 for health care this year. All that money you would like to spend on housing, clothes, food, or maybe even a new car will go for doctors, dentists, medicine, and hospital bills.

Some employees are lucky. Their employer helps pay the cost of health services through an employer sponsored health benefit. Employer sponsored health benefits cover about 75% of American workers and pay for about 35% of all health care in the United States. Many others are not so lucky. Between 31 and 37 million Americans have no health insurance. Either they can't afford health insurance or they can't find an insurance policy at any price because of previous health problems.
