Each of us has a story - the story of where our commitment to early childhood began. Winona Sample traces her story back to her childhood: "My father was one of the first Indian health doctors to come out to the reservation. He always wanted to come to the reservation, perhaps because he felt he had some Indian ancestry. He went out to the Hoppe Reservation where they had never seen a doctor before.

Early on he was able to work with medicine men, with healers. He knew there were many ways of healing. He deferred to them. He allowed for a positive relationship. He understood people didn't want to come to the hospital because they felt that going there would mean they were going to die. So he made sure that hospitals served the food the Indian people were used to, he allowed people to sleep on the floor.

And he brought abandoned children home to spend time with us. There were always babies rolling around on the floor. So this is why I couldn't do anything but work with children."
