Infants and young children are very sensual creatures. Carry a baby in arms and he may happily lean down and lick your salty arm. Croon sweet nothings lovingly as you change a young toddler's diaper, and as you clean his skin gently, he may well thrust his legs orgiastically and joyfully in response to intimate and tender ministrations. Babies have passionate feelings. They suck greedily, drool, lick, squeeze, bang, listen to lullabies, and respond with relaxation to massage and loving touch.


Sexuality is part of a young child's sensual repertoire. Directors need to know what kinds of sexual behaviors are normal to observe in child care and what sexual behaviors should raise concerns so that plans for addressing those concerns can be made with teachers and parents.

Normal Aspects of Sexuality in the Early Years

Masturbation is very normal in infants and young children. As soon as a caregiver takes off a diaper, many boys poke and pull at their penis. Little girls may pat their vulva and even confide to a beloved caregiver, "This is my best feeling part."
