All parents have dreams and aspirations for their children. When they say they want their son to learn the alphabet, they hope he will learn to read, write, and become educated. When they ask you to help their daughter to learn her numbers, they picture her ultimately learning to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and getting a good job someday. Parents' anticipation of what their children may become drives the demand for quality education. As early childhood educators, we have an obligation to respond to parents' desires and to employ the best practices of our profession to accomplish our mutual goals for children.

Sharing your program with families and helping staff to do so as well is a central aspect of any educator's job. Although parents and early childhood educators often share the same long-term goals for children, they do not always agree on how best to achieve these goals. To be responsive to the goals families have for their children, early childhood educators must build a relationship with each family, articulate a clear program philosophy, set curriculum goals, use the environment well, and maintain ongoing communication.
