“Chef Robert Irvine has two days and $10,000 to do the impossible” begins the popular reality show, Restaurant Impossible, on the Food Network. Chef Robert rushes in, sledge hammer in hand, to evaluate and save the week’s failing ­restaurant, typically on the verge of bankruptcy. In this and similar series, a pattern emerges over time of management messages for any business, including early care and education programs. The troubled restaurants are on the brink of ­disaster, heavily in debt due to lack of management expertise, and failure to address issues leading to a declining customer base. These are some factors that, if not addressed, lead to the demise of most any business, whether it be a restaurant, hotel, salon, or early care and education program.

Appearance

A major feature that turns customers away is appearance. Perhaps the facility is difficult to locate or not visible due to inadequate or confusing signage. More frequently it’s dirty or cluttered appearance keeps customers away. In many cases managers do not walk around regularly to identify and track needed maintainence, or even have the tools and supplies to make simple repairs. Inappropriate dress or unprofessional appearance of staff sometimes fails to instill confidence in potential customers.
