During the last decades the frequency, diversity, and severity of natural and human-made disasters, organised violence, economic deprivations, social inequalities, and denial, or violations of human rights have contributed to an increase in the number of unsafe and fragile environments for children and communities globally. Young children are considered as the most affected in such fragile contexts (Naughton, Hughes, & Smith, 2007). Due to disasters and conflicts, an estimated 45.2 million have been displaced, of which over 46% were children (UNHCR, 2011). It was estimated that 13% of the refugees, internally displaced people, and asylum-seekers in the world are young children (UNHCR, 2011).  

Millions of young children are forced to live in dangerous situations where they experience inadequate protection, care, and education (Kamel, 2006; Landers, 1998). The fragility threatens the safety and stability of the social and physical space, impacting on young children’s psychological and psychosocial well-being and healthy development. In fragile contexts, young children’s survival and basic needs are at risk. Harmful effects of stress, distress, and psychological issues impact on them; sometimes the effects could be long term.
