Children in our preschools and our communities are just not getting exposed to nature in any way. We find this problem to be pervasive in cities, suburbs and even small towns. It has to change, doesn’t it? How do we bring children into learning with nature whether in an urban schoolyard, a suburban preschool or at a nature center in a forest? This training institute is designed as an important step towards making that change. It is a celebration of the joys of children being with nature. The conference and training institute includes a dynamic combination of actively engaging workshops, presentations and dialogue. This is not a passive “just show up” experience, you will be immersed in doing, thinking and discussing as well as listening. With the intentional smaller size (limited to 200 attendees) there are wonderful opportunities to spend significant time with leading visionaries, and practitioners from around the world, these are folks who have been out there observing hundreds of sites and creating success stories for children learning with nature. Our goal is simple: To make Children Learning with Nature the most informative and memorable training institute that you have ever attended. If there is anything you need just let us know and we will do our very best to take care of it. All transportation and food is included in the registration fee from Sunday dinner through Tuesday dinner. We will have a bookstore set up Sunday and Tuesday.

Cultural competence in early education involves a conscious willingness and ability to value and embrace the significance of culture in the development of children and their families. Early educators must have a deep understanding of culture along with related race and socio-economic class issues, and how these factors influence our work. This seminar will generate strategies for addressing the contradictions that emerge as constant underlying themes in our work with the changing landscape of children and families we serve. Together, participants will: 1. identify ways in which culture, race and class impact values and beliefs about self and others. 2. create policy strategies and tools to mitigate the impact of institutional forms of bias on the development of children. 3. explore professional development practices to build a culturally competent workforce. 4. develop principles of best practices for working with culturally diverse populations. Offered in graduate credit (EDCS 656), undergraduate credit (ITE 499), Non-credit and CEU options. Contact [email protected] for more information or call (808) 956-2376.
