Ben Shoots Pool - A Videative
September 16, 2005
How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something, but to be someone.
-Coco Chanel

George Forman is one of the creators of, InSights, Exchange's video training tool. His team also produces a series of Videatives which are step by step training instruments that walk you through a video of an early childhood scene. The following is an example showing how a videative works:

Ben, now three years old, returns to one of his favorite play-spaces, the pool table. By using parallel cue sticks to make a ramp, Ben creates an unconventional way to get the ball into the pocket. George joins Ben at the pool table and, together, they consider how to aim the ramp to make the roll reliably accurate. In a side game that develops, we see how Ben works to make sense of how a random event has become determined. We see how a young child often answers a "Why?" question with a description or demonstration of "How." We watch how George learns more about Ben's knowledge by asking a series of gradually more directed questions that enable Ben to answer with an action rather than a verbal explanation. As George encourages Ben to reflect upon his own thinking, we see examples of how a young child's practical intelligence develops ahead of his representational intelligence.
