Characteristics of Effective Teams
May 15, 2014
I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.
-Margaret Thatcher

These five characteristics of effective teams are identified by Jon Katzenbach and Douglas Smith in the Harvard Business Review book On Managing People:

  1. A meaningful common purpose that the team has helped to shape.

  2. Specific performance goals that flow from the common purpose.

  3. Mix of complementary skills including technical expertise, problem-solving and decision-making skills, and interpersonal skills.

  4. A strong commitment to how the work gets done.

  5. Mutual accountability - trust and commitment cannot be forced.

Managing people is fraught with challenges: What really motivates people? How do you deal with problem employees? How can you build a team that is greater than the sum of its parts?

The answers to these questions can be elusive — even to a seasoned manager. This valuable resource will help you deal with these and many other management challenges.
