Rethinking Positive Thinking
February 23, 2015
Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
-C.S. Lewis

"Positive thinking often hinders us," says Gabriele Oettingen, author of Rethinking Positive Thinking: Inside the New Science of Motivation as reported in Work & Family Life (February 2015).

"'Dreaming about the future calms you down... but it also can drain you of the energy you need to take action in pursuit of your goals,' Oettigen observes.  In other words, positive thinking can be feel-good exercise that actually lessens one's personal readiness to pursue a needed or desired goal.

"The solution is not to discard all of the happy talk and 'get real' with whatever challenging tasks need to be done....  What will work better, she says is a hybrid approach that combines positive thinking with realism.  It works this way:  You think of a wish and, for a few minutes, let your mind wander freely and imagine that wish coming true.  Then consciously shift gears and spend a few minutes thinking about the potential obstacles that are likely to stand in the way of realizing your wish."

This is THE classic on creative thinking, written with the clarity, knowledge, and experience of a skilled advertising man. A Technique For Producing Ideas is a step-by-step technique for sparking creativity in ANY field.

Since its publication in 1965, A Technique for Producing Ideas has helped thousands of advertising copywriters smash through internal barriers to unleash their creativity.  Professionals from poets and painters to scientists and engineers have also used the techniques in this concise, powerful book to generate exciting ideas on demand, at any time, on any subject.  Now let James Webb Young's unique insights help you look inside yourself to find that big, elusive idea — and once and for all lift the veil of mystery from the creative process.

I believe that the idea of teaching this to young children is out of this world but there are some positive aspects about this approach although I may not agree whole heartedly with it, such as it teaches children how to expand on their goals and gets them to thinking as to which obstacles or things that might get in their way while trying to complete their goals, etc.
