In School, But Not Learning
June 3, 2015
When you discard your own pettiness, center yourself in integrity, and reach into your soul for your greatness, it is always there.
-Lynne Twist

"We've made substantial progress around the globe in sending people to school, but a large number of people who have gone to school haven't learned anything," claims Eric Hanushek, an expert on economics and education from Stanford University, and co-author of the recently released Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report, Universal Basic Skills: What Countries Stand to Gain. The introduction to this report notes...

"While access to schooling has expanded around the world, many countries have not realised the hoped-for improvements in economic and social well-being. Access to education by itself is an incomplete goal for development; many students leave the education system without basic proficiency in literacy and numeracy. As the world coalesces around new sustainable development targets towards 2030, the focus in education is shifting towards access and quality. Using projections based on data from the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and other international student assessments, this report offers a glimpse of the stunning economic and social benefits that all countries, regardless of their national wealth, stand to gain if they ensure that every child not only has access to education but, through that education, acquires at least the baseline level of skills needed to participate fully in society."

I have been an Ezchange Everyday reader for about 3 years and our agency subscribes to the magazine. I actually think an online subscription is more logical for today's world. Thank you for lifting me up with your quotes and for making me think about important topics first thing every day! It's entirely too easy to get caught up in day to day mundane tasks and to not take time to really contemplate why what we do and how we do it are so important! Your articles sometimes inspire me to look at something differently and sometimes just reinvigorate me because no matter how long that road might be, you've confirmed that I'm on the right one! Keep up your good work!!
