Finding Qualified Staff
June 30, 2004

"Computers are always right, but life isn’t about being right." - John Cage

Finding Qualified Staff

In an Exchange Insta-Poll initiated on April 28, ExchangeEveryDay readers identified "shortages of qualified staff" and "state of the economy" as the two most serious threats facing early childhood programs.  Participants in the survey observed:

"Although the high unemployment rates have brought more candidates to our door, there is still a dearth of truly qualified individuals."

"In the past, when we advertised for a teacher, we had a flood of applicants. Today we sometimes have no responses at all to an ad."

"It is the worst thing about my job.  I will just train a new staff only to have them leave, and have to replace them with a green employee needing to be trained from the ground up."

"It is so hard to find individuals who have that spark...who see working with young children as a calling, a privilege, an opportunity.  Has that zeal disappeared forever?"

Given the importance of finding qualified staff, this week's Exchange Insta-Poll is surveying readers about their most successful strategies for recruiting staff.  To help us by sharing your perspectives on this survey, go to http://mail.ccie.com/go/eed/0235

We apologize for any inconvience this quirk of the internet world may cause you.
