Educating Young Children for Peace
August 30, 2004

"When the oak-tree is felled, the whole forest echoes with it; but a hundred acorns are planted silently by some unnoticed breeze." - Thomas Carlyle in "On History"

Educating Young Children for Peace

One of the proud moments of Exchange was announcing the publication of Hearing Everyone's Voice:  Educating Young Children for Peace and Democratic Community.   This 318-page curriculum guide, edited by Susan Hopkins, brings together the creativity of 75 educators, poets, psychologists, head teachers, parents, directors, musicians, consultants, artists, and peacemakers such as Tom Hunter, Louis Derman-Sparks, Diane Levin, Lee McKay, Peggy Schirmer and Betsy Gibbs.

The book, filled with practical ideas and tools, includes the following chapters...
*  Stories to Illustrate Theories of Children's Social Development

*  Principles to Promote Democratic Community

*  Convergences and Connections Between the Democratic Principles, and Goals of Peace Education and Anti-Bias Education

*  Strategies to Build Community Through Democratic Practice

*  Emergent Learning Strategies

*  Strategies for Taking Action

*  Children's Issues:  In Their Own Voices and Images

*  Adult Issues:  Obstacles to Overcome on the Way to Achieving Democratic Practices
