Bill Pelz, Professor of Psychology at Herkimer County Community College was the recipient of the 2003 Sloan-C Award for Excellence in Online Teaching. In an article in the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks (Volume 8, Issue 3, June 2004), a publication of the Sloan Consortium, Pelz identifies his three key principles for effective eTeaching:

1. Let the students do (most of) the work:
   • Student led discussions
   • Students find and discuss web resources
   • Students help each other learn
   • Students grade their own homework assignments
   • Case study analysis
2. Interactivity is the heart and soul of effective asynchronous learning:
   • Collaborative research papers
   • Research proposal team projects
3. Strive for presence:
   • Social presence
   • Cognitive presence
   • Teaching presences
