In an article from Teaching with Technology Today, Rosemary Lehman, Senior Outreach/Distance Education Specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Extension writes about the instructor’s role in designing an overall experience for learners, and offers principles and effective practices for helping instructors move from face-to-face to online teaching successfully.

Lehman identified three principles for preparing instructors for the new interactive experience of teaching online:

1. Reach them with their love of teaching
2. Provide a means for voicing issues and concerns
3. Instruct via the technology to “experience the experience”

She goes on to describe key principles to consider in the distance education development and design process:

1. Understanding the learner
2. Knowing the environment
3. Being a team player
4. Developing formats and strategies
5. Creating interaction activities, visuals, and print materials
6. Integrating support
7. Monitoring for quality

Lehman concludes that “effective courses start with a strong instructional content base, an instructor who is willing to venture into new areas, an understanding of the technologies and media that are selected, a commitment to follow underlying distance education design principles, and the support of institutions.”
