Brain Development in Progress
February 14, 2007
Any time you sincerely want to make a change, the first thing you must do is to raise your standards.
-Anthony Robbins

As an instructor of future Early Childhood Educators, I emphasize the need for exemplary standards of care. Early in the academic term, students nod along because I am their instructor; but, as students increase their knowledge of the brain, they see the influence that their work will have on the development of the young children with whom they will work.

The Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) advocates for high standards in the training of Early Childhood Educators worldwide. Here are only a few of the standards they suggest should be integrated into ECE curricula:

  • Instruction on integrated planning for children that includes the individual child, child development, teaching philosophy, and social policies
  • Strategies to create learning environments that consider children holistically
  • Practice in behavior management and positive guidance skills
  • Effective communication with families
