Sharing Decision Making
February 9, 2012
Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.
-Soren Kierkegaard
In her book, Circle of Influence, Paula Jorde Bloom encourages early childhood leaders to involve staff members in the decision making process.  In doing so, leaders need to recognize that there are four broad categories of decision types — each with different implications for shared decision making:
  • Unilateral decisions that are best made by the owner, the board of directors, or the director because of legal requirements of the organization or the need for confidentiality;
  • Decisions that can be made with the input of staff through a consultative approach;
  • Decisions that can be made jointly with staff through a collaborative approach; and
  • Delegated decisions that can be made by the teachers or support staff exclusively.

Circle of Influence (2nd Ed.)
Implementing Shared Decision Making and Participative Management

As the director of an early childhood program, you are in a unique position to influence the decision-making policies and practices at your center. In this book you'll learn that participative management is both a philosophy and a set of behaviors that define your interactions with people.

Circle of Influence will help you:
  • determine your preferred decision-making style
  • analyze different types of decisions
  • assess the impact of the decisions you make
  • and more!
