Trudeau on Diversity

You can never learn less; you can only learn more. The reason I know so much is because I have made so many mistakes.
-Buckminster Fuller

The Exchange Essentials article collection, Supporting Language Diversity, includes many articles exploring how to support and benefit from classrooms where diverse languages are spoken. Recently this point was underscored by some heartfelt remarks by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. I encourage you to hear what he had to say:

So proud of our prime minister, who beautifully describes my experience of raising a child in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Not all cities are so diverse, but we have people from all over the world here, and they live side by side and work together for the betterment of our community. It's a beautiful thing. Children are raised side by side with others who don't look like them or practice the same religion or have the same customs.

excellent description of multiculturalism. Not episodic, integrated, in just the way it is most easily done.

"Because it's 2016!"

Seriously, healthy social intergration is a key to a peaceful, harmonious society, in my opinion. Keeping one's heritage identity while feeling a sense of belonging is how we prevent young people running toward integrating into destructive organizations that are eager to give them a sense of belonging, while exploiting them to their own ends. Good having a leader who gets it.
