In her article,"'I Want My Baby to Read': Supporting Parents in Guiding Early Language and Literacy Development," which serves as the basis for the Out of the Box Training Kit, "Supporting Parents in Guiding Early Language and Literacy Development," Bisa Batten Lewis provides guidance on what literacy strategies are appropriate and what strategies are not appropriate. She lists these appropriate language and literacy goals:

- Beginning to express themselves freely and creatively using sounds
- Attending to stories

We really need to educate parents, politicians, the public in general about what is appropriate learning for children. The idea of using the term 'literacy' with infants seems ridiculous, yet the 'goals' listed above are really what we would want in normal development. Politicians especially are so quick to tout the great benefits of preschool but I am afraid they think it is early academics instead of developmentally appropriate play-based growth. We must stop the push down of academics and demand playful, joyful, caring preschool/kindergarten experiences for our children (and of course, the infants and toddlers)---natural, conversation-rich, loving care!

Hi the title of this concerns me as we are losing play for kindergarteners and pre-k and now we are moving from nurturing to academics for infants. I am sure I agree with much of this article and I hold all us responsible for not just developmentally appropriate practice but compassionate and joyful practice. Please use a different title that supports the whole beautiful infant.
