Life Threatening Allergies
May 4, 2016
Learning with loose parts encourages children to explore, experiment, design, create, and construct. It gives them the opportunity to figure out that there are different ways of doing things.
-Carla Gull

In her article, "Food Allergies: Being Aware and Planning for Care," which serves as the basis for the new Exchange Out of the Box Training Kit by the same name, Iris Graville describes how to respond to allergies and food intolerance.  In addressing life-threatening allergies, Graville outlines what elements of a plan a center should have in place for a child with severe allergies:

  • A complete list of foods that can trigger a reaction.
  • Symptoms this child exhibits after contact with allergenic foods.
  • Emergency response.
  • Safe storage and handling of medications, including signed parent and health care provider authorizations.
  • Documentation of allergic reaction events.
  • Training of appropriate staff and volunteers about preventing exposure to the allergenic foods and emergency response.
