The Beginning of Life
June 24, 2016
You'll sing a song, and I'll sing a song, and we'll sing a song together!
-Ella Jenkins, American Folk Singer

A great new film, The Beginning of Life, explores dramatically and beautifully the critical nature of early childhood.  We are especially eager to share this with you because one of the film's producers is Eduardo Queiroz from Fundação Maria Cecília Souto Vidigal. Eduardo and his foundation have been key supporters of the World Forum Foundation's Global Leaders for Latin America initiative.

The film, like so many recent documentaries, explores brain research pointing to the importance of the early years. And, it explores so much more: it has great interviews with parents around world (many of which are extremely touching); it deals with some key issues such as the challenges facing low-income families, the wide definition of families in today's society, the importance of connecting children with nature, and the importance of men in the lives of children.

The full length film is also available on Netflix and iTunes.

The Philosophical Baby

by Alison Gopnik
One of the key experts in the film, "The Beginning of Life"

In the last decade there has been a revolution in our understanding of the minds of infants and young children. We used to believe that babies were irrational, and that their thinking and experience were limited. Now Alison Gopnik — a leading psychologist and philosopher, as well as a mother — explains the cutting-edge scientific and psychological research that has revealed that babies learn more, create more, care more, and experience more than we could ever have imagined.

My daughter spotted this title on Netflix and suggested we watch it together. I was a fan before the movie finished and was thinking of which course would be the most suitable for viewing and commenting on this film. I chose the Child, Family, and Community course and have already designed and activity and shown it in my class. It is a marvelous exploration of diverse family situations and does an excellent job of including the father's perspective in the documentary. Thank you

I am keen to be able to bring this film to Newcastle to share it with many different people in early childhood education & health. The value of sharing such powerful knowledge between different disciplines such as education, health, welfare is critical to how we see & value children. It is also an opportunity for politicians to see the value of cherishing our children of today for a grand future of every community.
