The new Exchange book, Being with Infants and Toddlers:  A Curriculum that Works for Caregivers, includes this quote from Dr. Emmi Pikler, founder of the Pikler approach to caring for infants and toddlers...

"Getting to know each other is, of course, mutual.

"As we get to know the child, he begins to get to know us, and this happens primarily through our hands.

"Hands constitute the first relationship for the baby with the world beyond breastfeeding.

"Hands pick him up, lay him down, wash, dress, and feed him.

"What kind of world reveals itself to an infant?

"What a difference it makes when gentle, patient, and peaceful hands, which also convey safety and clarity, take care of him."

The idea of viewing babies perspective of developing relationships first through hands is lovely. Loving, patient hands communicate so much. thank you for this.
