Tucked into the University of Kansas campus, Hilltop Child Development Center staff and director Joan Reiber are proud of the center's 20 years of serving children and families from the surrounding community of Lawrence and the University's staff and student community. Hilltop is a private, non-profit center accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. With a waiting list longer than its enrollment, and a well-developed relationship with the University of Kansas, the programs at Hilltop are thriving.The center operates year round to cover ongoing and changing student/staff needs. It is open five days a week from 7:15 AM to 5:45 PM, offering care for children 12 months through 10 years. Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks are prepared on site.
Hilltop reaps many benefits from their relationship with the University. Because the University leases the former Methodist student building to the center at basically no cost and provides free janitorial services and utilities, Hilltop is able to devote 86% of its budget to staff salaries. A continually upgraded salary scale and an enviable recruitment location enable Hilltop to employ well-trained staff.
