When Cindy Teachy was hired to start an afterschool program at Faith Lutheran Church in Lexington, Kentucky, she took it on as a challenge, "It was something I had never heard of before." Well, that was then and now is now, and today when you ask about afterschool care in Kentucky, you hear about Cindy Teachy.She and Dana Sharp, her assistant, staff Faith Lutheran's Afterschool Program, a non-profit, church-sponsored program that serves 28 children in kindergarten through fifth grade. It is open from 7:15 AM to 8:30 AM and 3:15 PM to 6 PM Monday though Friday and 7:15 AM to 6 PM on inservice and snow days.
"I started the program by trial and error. I began with a teacher mindset, calling the children students. Now I am more comfortable with a preschool model. The kids should feel like they're plopping in the living room, that they are not directed and not herded. They have free choice - and they love it.
