In the early '70s two men came to Hawaii; and in 1972 each of them started an alternative school - one in the city, one in the country. Now, over 20 years later, Chuck Larson and Steve Albert each direct a multi-site child care organization, one in the city, one in the country. But along the way they met and became fellow adventurers as well as fellow directors. What they have enjoyed together, both in work and play, has enriched their lives, and the lives of their wives and children, and has had a significant impact on the quality of care available to young children in Hawaii.Steve Albert: We oldtimers, those of us who have been directors for 20 plus years, didn't usually come directly into child care. A dissatisfied business major in college, I began working in advertising, doing research marketing with Matell Toys. New toys would be delivered to our offices in armored cars and under strict security we would watch young children play with these toys. Sometimes we would play with them; this was my first interaction with young children.
