Incidents that occurred in school in one's early childhood years often bring back pleasant, painful, anxious, or humorous memories. It doesn't seem to matter how old one is, memories pop up out of nowhere and the feelings one had when the happening took place are once again brought into focus.

Lillie, now in her forties, remembers when her kindergarten teacher chose her to wear the good conduct ribbon. She felt wonderfully happy and important. Her joy was short lived because her teacher took the good conduct ribbon from her because she pulled another child's hair. She said that her feeling of self-esteem plunged to zero and that it took her a long time to get over it. She still associates hair pulling with good conduct.

Alicia, going on 80, remembers how her mother always complimented her on keeping her bureau drawers clean and orderly, so when her second grade teacher, Miss Wilson, had the children stand and tell something they were doing that showed they were following good health procedures, she, with great pride, stood and said, "I keep my drawers clean."
