At the PICSI Center (Parents Infant Care Services Inc.), Linda Gordon, the director, told me that rules are few and simple. She said that one rule is that inside toys stay inside and outside toys stay outside.

One day she watched Anise, just under two years of age, go over to Jeremy who was playing with an inside toy he had taken outside. She pointed to the toy and said, "Inside toy, inside toy." Jeremy dropped the toy. Anise picked it up, brought it into the playroom, and said, "Inside toy." Linda said, "Good remembering, Anise." A very pleased Anise smiled.

A few days ago, I was at the Ocean Park Children's Center. A group of five, six, and seven year olds were busy writing rules to follow when going to the beach. After much discussion, they agreed on eight:

1. Pick a partner and walk with him only.
2. Be nice and respect the teacher.
3. When you get to the beach, don't go wild.
4. When the teacher calls, come.
5. Watch out for jellyfish.
6. Don't talk back to the teacher.
7. Don't fight with each other.
8. If you are drowning, raise your right hand.
