Adult facial expressions can be real message conveyors.

I recently read a story about a little boy who told his mother that he spent his money on ice cream, candy, and popcorn. Seeing the look of disapproval on her face, he quickly added, "And a green vegetable, of course."

It reminded me of when I was a little girl. I usually knew from my mother's smile, frown, lift of the eyebrows, laugh, tightening of the lips what she was thinking. And, oh yes! There was what my brother and I called "THE LOOK." It said, "Stop what you are doing or saying, NOW!" No words were necessary. The message came through loud and clear.

When Molly and Lisa were playing in the sandbox and got into an argument over whose turn it was to use the shovel, Molly picked up a handful of sand to throw at Lisa, but stopped when she saw her teacher watching her. She dropped the sand and said to her teacher, "You look like you're going to say 'No.'" (There probably would have been no argument if there had been two shovels!)
