It was a beautiful, sunny day in Ban Grover, Maine. I was sitting looking out at the lake waiting for profound, meaningful words to tumble out of my head on to a blank sheet of paper. All that was coming through was prittle-prattle and brittle-brattle.I was giving serious consideration to doing something else - like going swimming - when Elise, Betsy Hiteshew's seven year old niece, came over and asked, "What are you doing?" I replied, "I'm trying to write something, and I'm frustrated because I don't seem to be getting anywhere. I guess I'll have to give up for now and try again a little later."
Elise gently patted my shoulder and said, "Don't be mad at yourself, Docia. It isn't the first time and it won't be the last." Wow!
Where or when Elise heard those words, I don't know. That they had meaning for her was obvious. I smiled and said, "Right you are." She smiled at me and gave me a big hug. Communication at its best.
I wonder how many times we listen to our children and are surprised when we hear our words come back to us - not always complimentary but usually accurate. It would be great ...
