She pushed the door open with her shoulder, "Would you please show me how you work with Steven? I can't seem to figure it out." Linda quickly left our discussion. As the teacher had done, she wrapped her arms tightly around the boy's body and dropped to the floor. "Well, Steven," she spoke slowly, quietly, firmly. "You are out of control. You need to get back in control of yourself. You have some work to do. So, you need to make a decision. Do you choose to wash windows, or do you want to vacuum?" A few seconds later, Steven made his decision, "Vacuum." Teacher, Linda, and child went off in search of the vacuum.

This all happened minutes into our interview with Linda Ranson, director of Broken Arrow Clubhouse, located just outside Tulsa, Oklahoma. I was struck by the fact that the teacher requested a learning opportunity, that Linda's response was so quickly effective, and that Stephen's difficulties were channeled into some pretty enthusiastic vacuuming.
