Making a difference, honoring children and families, and sharing the passion for what they do - that is the UWM Children's Center.

The Center serves UWM students, faculty, staff, and members of the UWM Alumni Association with both full-time and flexibly scheduled options. This NAEYC accredited program started in 1971 with 30 children and has grown to a licensed capacity of 285 children, ages six weeks through 12 years. The array of programs includes infant and toddler care, preschool, full-time/full-year mixed four- and five-year-old kindergarten (both public school and private-pay slots) and school-age care before and after school and full-time in the summer. Housed in a former elementary school, the program employs 21 professional staff and 140 part-time student staff.

While the numbers indicate the growth of the UWM Children's Center over the years, they don't really indicate the heart of the program. The Center operates from the belief that children are capable, creative, and competent and the classrooms reflect that belief. This is a good place to be - it feels, looks, and sounds happy, busy, fun, and nurturing. Kathe Lerario, office manager, said it best as she developed the Center's tagline, "Celebrating 30 years of loving, laughing, and learning!" ...
