Immediately after we faced the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Warren and I made a decision to rebuild our child care center as two apartments. However, the city of New Orleans would only approve the location for one dwelling with a child care center. But, before the storm, we had entered into a commitment with United Way to become nationally accredited. We met to reaffirm our commitment and discuss how we would move forward. Todd Baptiste told us United Way would do all they could to provide funds and other resources to aid our rebuild. We decided we would return.

During the time we were not open, I continued my pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. We also decided to focus the center on quality care and to the care of the underserved infant/toddler age group, ignored by available centers. My part-time job in an infant center in Jackson, Mississippi, gave me ideas on how we would rebuild Gilda’s Academy for age appropriateness for our children and convenience for our employees. We had two locations prior to the storm, so we came back to New Orleans to live in the center that was not flooded.
