The first time Bonnie and I brought our grandchildren together for a visit, we played a drawing game with four-year-old Caroline, each of us drawing our ­version of a cat, or a dog, or a flower. As we drew, we talked, and Bonnie said to me, “This is what is most important” and she wrote the word “WITH” on her paper. Meaning: doing things WITH children — engaging with them, partnering with them, seeing things as they are seen with young eyes. When we gathered up the papers, I noticed that Caroline had been listening, because she had written the word WITH on her own paper, as if to remember a word that must be, and is, very important.
