No matter what the arena—an early childhood classroom, an administrator or college instructor’s office, an after-hours conference conversation—before long, frustration or disgruntlement is expressed over the conditions we face in our ECE work. As with so much in our troubled world today, I find myself echoing the bumper sticker that reads, “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention!” We are way past pinning our hopes for change on little bandages for the status quo. Where are the stars to which we can hitch our broken-down wagons? Where are those new or long-term ECE warriors who have mastered a steady, sustainable way of working, stepping outside the habitual thinking that dampens creativity or impedes innovation? 

I think immediately of Christina Aubel, who lures me to a place of reassurance with her creative mind and bold courage to step over the challenges in our field. Over many years I have watched her craft her work and career path in unconventional ways—as a center studio coordinator, conference presenter, toddler teacher, center director, ed coordinator, trainer/coach, and now college instructor.
