You just never know when you are the one. In every moment the possibility exists that what you choose to say or do can be the comment or action that changes a life.

Each of us can remember some of those moments in our own lives, when ideas were shared that changed the course of our lives. It was Stan Nissen, a friend, who said to us 30 years ago, “Why don't you start a magazine?” It was Rodney and Carmel Kenner, colleagues from Australia, who said, “Yes, an international conference is a great idea.” Friend and advisor Bob Lurie: “If he believes in you, then others will, too.” In their moment, each of these special people was the one.

Adam was born into our family of readers �" a smart guy, but not a reader. We were educators, for goodness sake, and we had many tools and resources at hand; we tried them all. But Adam did not like to read. We were in the Tattered Cover bookshop in Denver one afternoon, and my dad said, “Adam, choose a book, anything you want, and I’ll buy it for you.” Dad didn’t know he would be the one.
