What's In This Kit?
This training kit helps teachers understand a cognitive approach to art. Teachers are encouraged to explore art as a medium to communicate theories, thoughts, ideas, and emotions. Teachers will develop strategies to explore art mediums and to set the stage for artistic learning in their classrooms. Teachers are encouraged to connect classroom activities and content to meaningful and intentional art exploration. This training program contains the following components:

Kit Timeline:
Preparation time for this kit is estimated at 1.5 hours. Implementation and actual training time is 3.0 hours, which includes 1.5 hours of Face-to-Face Training and 1.5 hours of Independent Study and an Applied Activity Project.

Training Outcomes:

After completing this training, Learners will be able to:
  • analyze and refine their approach to art activities and projects with children to support a cognitive approach.
  • guide children to use art as a way of learning and to develop artistic knowledge, skills, and dispositions about visual thinking.
  • connect classroom activities and content to meaningful and intentional art exploration.
  • explore new and varied artistic materials for use with children.
These training outcomes address the following American standards:
  • National Association for the Education of Young Children's (NAEYC) Early Childhood Program Standards and Accreditation Criteria & Guidance for Assessment (2014). More information on NAEYC's standards can be found at www.naeyc.org.
    • The schedule provides a) children learning opportunities, experiences, and projects that extend over the course of several days and incorporates time for: b) play, c) creative expression, d) large-group, e) small-group, and f) child-initiated activity. (2.A.11)
