The early childhood classroom environment has a tremendous influence on the development of young children. One critical component of this environment is the physical arrangement of the space, including the availability of play and creative materials. Attention to the arrangement of materials communicates to children, who use the items, that they are valued in this classroom. By following a few simple techniques, an early childhood teacher can transform her classroom into an effective and appropriately stimulating place.

Where is it? In some early childhood classrooms, teachers and young children spend a great deal of time looking for materials. Children’s choices are frequently determined by their ability to locate specific items. If a material is not found, their plans and activity will change to match what is available. When materials are organized and stored in effective ways, they support the planned learning objectives of the program and the constructive learning of young children.
