It’s easy to be skeptical about social media, isn’t it? Posts, pins, likes, and tweets. What’s it all for? But as it turns out, there is a very real point to social media. This is certainly the case for early learning programs trying to spread the word about their services, their involvement in the community, and their commitment to early childhood education.

I know from experience that most providers survive through word of mouth. One parent tells another about a great program, that parent tells another, and so on. But social media is word of mouth writ very large — and the potential benefits for quality child care programs are equally large.

Who uses social media? Although it’s hard to believe, there are nearly 2 billion users worldwide1 — and the numbers keep growing. Here in the United States, use of social media cuts across every demographic you can think of: income, ethnic background, urban setting, suburban setting, rural setting, age — you name it.2 As a result, the opportunity to connect is truly unprecedented.

Although using sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram takes a little getting used to, these sites are wonderfully effective tools for promoting your program. And let’s not be coy, ...
