Engaging Playful Inquiry: Opal School Visitation Days
Sponsored by Opal School of Portland Children’s Museum
Portland, Oregon, United States
Phone: 503.471.9906
Web Site: http://bit.ly/OpalSchool_VisitationDays
E-mail: [email protected]
Opal School’s mission is to strengthen education through provoking fresh ideas concerning environments where creativity, imagination, and the wonder of learning thrive. This multi-day workshop immerses educators in Opal School’s practice of Playful Inquiry in a way that deepens engagement in their own work. In Portland, you’ll observe, analyze, and reflect on the joys and challenges of an approach to learning that holds a strong image of children as thinkers, planners, and contributors. Each program begins with an evening session, introducing our work and examining physical environments, and continues with two full days of classroom (ages 3-11) observation, presentations, conversation, reflection, materials work, and application to your settings. Together, we’ll explore questions of mutual concern: What is the role of schools today? How might Playful Inquiry open new doors to learning for children and the adults who work with them? How can schools play a role in creating more just and beautiful democracies? This retreat serves a wide range of participants—longstanding teachers & those new to the field; classroom teachers, support specialists, administrators, & teacher-educators; teachers who teach in monolingual and multilingual settings with great racial & ethnic diversity or relative homogeneity; serving communities experiencing affluence & poverty; working in public & tuition-funded schools across North America & around the world—all united in their hunger to grow.

Although there have been thousands of published articles in FASD in general, there has been limited research specifically on adolescents and adults with FASD or on individuals across the lifespan. As those individuals diagnosed with FASD continue to age, the “need to know” across a broad spectrum of areas is becoming critically important for identifying clinically relevant research questions and directions. This interactive 2020 conference will provide an opportunity to be at the forefront of addressing these issues. We will welcome a diverse group of professionals, researchers, students, families and individuals with FASD. The Call for Abstracts is now open, deadline: September 13, 2019: http://interprofessional.ubc.ca/initiatives/fasd2020/call-for-abstracts/ For more information, please visit the website at http://interprofessional.ubc.ca/initiatives/fasd2020/, and follow us on Twitter: @IPCE_UBC.
