Underachieving students often fail to turn in assignments. They fail to attend class regularly, fail to build positive relationships, and fail to steer clear of self-defeating behaviors. Underachievers fail to find meaning in school work, fail to ask for help, and fail to see the connection between effort, success, and failure.

Learning Stories epitomize a narrative, sociocultural, feminist, indigenous approach to the study, assessment and documentation of children’s learning. Learning Stories challenge the idea that development occurs in predictable, prescribed, universal sequences. Learning Stories celebrate the child by taking a credit rather than a deficit approach to learning. Learning Stories offer a thoughtful and reflective window into a child’s learning as this learning happens. These stories attempt to describe unique experiences or moments that cause teachers to pause, wonder or consider a particular event. At their best, Learning Stories inform future curriculum paths and directions. The sociocultural narrative of a Learning Story is pleasingly aligned with a Reggio inspired view of the capable, competent and confident child, a protagonist of their own learning, each with a unique personal, historical and cultural identity.

“Shanker Self-Reg® is a powerful method for understanding stress and managing tension and energy flow in order to support mindful self-regulation.” The self-reg lens invites a mindset that sees “misbehaviour” as a manifestation of a stress response. Self-reg helps us to identify hidden and overt stressors in ourselves, others and in the children with whom we work and gives us tools to reframe stress, reduce it, reflect on the stress response and finally to find a sense of well-being through restoration and the development of resilience.

Literacy and Play: The Perfect Partnership

Early reading success has been shown, through numerous studies, to be a strong predictor of academic success throughout a child’s school career. Teachers in the early years strive to make literacy experiences developmentally appropriate, meaningful, joyful and playful. Language arts experts are quick to remind teachers that isolating reading skills from other components of literacy development (writing, listening, and speaking) can create unnecessary stumbling blocks on the path to reading success for children. The primary objective in early childhood is to create learning environments and lessons that are play-based, authentic, and integrated across the entire curriculum. Teachers have endless possibilities to promote literacy through playful experiences interwoven across all curricular areas in their programs. In the early years, when children play in purposely designed, literacy-rich environments, teachers can help foster self-confident and self-assured literacy learners. This workshop will benefit preschool through early primary grade teachers, early childhood special education teachers, early years reading specialists, and administrators of elementary schools and care/education centers.

STEM and Early Education: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Learning Through Play

STEM is more than an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. It represents an important shift in pedagogical thinking in the early childhood years regarding teaching and learning in these important curricular areas. Although STEM has been a topic of academic conversation and research since the early 2000s, STEM has gained considerable attention globally in the last five years. Mounting evidence points to a need for further research and a focus on professional development in STEM understanding and what it means to early childhood teachers and administrators. For effective and engaging STEM instruction to become the norm in classrooms, we must begin in the beginning. Early childhood educators are uniquely positioned to start their young students on a positive path in STEM learning. These are the years that attitudes, interests, and self-confidence can be fostered so that children are eager to engage with the world in which they live.

Reggio Inspired Pedagogy

Reggio Inspired Pedagogy explores a pursuit that lasts for our entire teaching career. Regardless of where we see ourselves on the path to enriching or reflecting on our work with young children, or those who teach them, this intensive three day workshop will provide a deeper knowledge and understanding of the Reggio Emilia approach to teaching in the Early Years. The foundational principles of teacher as researcher, progettazione, and the learning environment as the third teacher will be explored. Learning environments will be examined in terms of the atelier, a place of creative possibilities, research and the expression of symbolic languages. Plans for classroom change will be considered within the Reggio inspired framework of the Mosaic Approach to environmental design. Participants will engage in a variety of provocations and collegial dialogue aimed to encourage reflection on teaching practices, environmental revitalization and a Reggio Inspired image of the child, the teacher, the family, and the school.

Making Learning Visible

Berlin, Germany

E-mail: [email protected]
The Making Learning Visible project was first developed collaboratively between researchers at Harvard University’s Project Zero and educators of Reggio Emilia. To come to a better understanding of learning, pedagogical documentation is created with the intent to invite children to reflect on their learning, as individuals and in groups, and to provide an avenue for teachers to come to a deeper understanding of teaching and learning. During the two day workshop, participants will experience many opportunities to explore materials, utilizing an inquiry lens, with the intent to gather artifacts of individual and group learning, create pedagogical documentation and engage in reflective dialogue about the process of making learning visible.
