RESOURCE ON EXERCISING YOUR BRAIN

The October, 2002 issue of Work & Family Life (workfam@aol.com), recommends Keep Your Brain Young (Wiley, $24.95) by Guy McKhann and Marilyn Albert for its insights on keeping our brain fit...

"The book is divided into three main parts. The first covers the everyday concerns we have about how our brain works. It guides us through the changes we can all expect as the brain matures. The authors talk about the brain in relation to nutrition, sleep, depression, stress and alcohol, and they offer strategies to remember names, numbers and facts.

"In a section on the brain and your body, they discuss pain, body functions, protecting your senses, bouts of dizziness and how to keep your balance -- literally.

"The last part deals with preventing and treating serious problems of the brain such as acute confusion and memory loss, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and stroke.

"Even here, the authors are encouraging and optimistic, citing current trends in brain research. They write: 'By protecting your brain as well as using it, you can move through your second half with awareness and composure."
