How Risky Is It?
December 14, 2007
I think there's a little child in all of us and we all too often forget to let the child out to play.
-Donna A. Favors
In this health conscious age we are all tempted from time to time to take shortcuts in our health routines. Real Simple magazine (December 2007; www.realsimple.com) has spelled out the relative risk of various common shortcuts by rating them on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 indicating there may be serious health consequences to this choice (the article, "How Risky Is It?" spells out the logic behind each rating):

5 - Wearing disposable contact lenses longer than recommended
1 - Going to bed without brushing your teeth
4 - Popping one of your husband's sleeping pills
2 - Going barefoot in the gym shower
5 - Not finishing a course of antibiotics
1 - Trying on pierced earrings in the store
2 - Eating food past its expiration date
5 - Eating unwashed fruit
1 - Waiting a few years between physicals
3 - Swallowing an extra pill if a headache won't go away
