Why Go to School?
December 27, 2007
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.
-Harper Lee
The second publication in the Early Childhood in Focus series (United Kingdom, The Open University, 2007; www.bernardvanleer.org), "Early Childhood and Primary Education," included views from young children on why one should go to school...

"What shall I say? I go to school because I like it. I have lots of friends there. Every day we go to and back from school together. It's good." " girl aged 6, Bangladesh

"...to learn good habits like not to talk with food in your mouth. We learn to behave well." " boy aged 6, Nigeria

"I want to be a teacher like my preschool teacher. I want to teach children like her. That's why I want to study." " girl aged 6, Bangladesh

"My father wants me to be an engineer. If I don't go to school, I'll be illiterate. I'll never be able to become an engineer." " boy aged 6, Bangladesh

"...so that we can learn and help people. We can become lawyers or doctors and help our parents." " girl aged 6, Nigeria

"I don't know why children go to schools " it's probably because they have to." " boy aged 6, Fiji

I wanted to share with you a quote from one of our alumni preschoolers to his younger sister who was apprehensive about attending preschool but wanted to go to school with her older brother instead, "You don't want to go to school with me. I have to do lots of stuff and homework. That's for older kids. You'll like preschool it's all choose and do. If you don't choose it you don't have to do it!"
