Learning by Explaining
March 5, 2008
Anyone who does anything to help a child...is a hero to me.
-Fred Rogers
"Learning improves dramatically among young children who take the time to explain academic concepts to their mothers or who explain the logic aloud to themselves," reports Education Week (January 30, 2008; www.edweek.org). More specifically, a study conducted by a team of researchers at Vanderbilt University, found that...

"Four- and 5-year olds who explained concepts to their mothers before taking a test scored correctly on 76% of the questions on a test of reasoning, and children who explained concepts aloud to themselves prior to the test scored 72% correct. On the other hand, children who did not explain the concepts at all prior to taking the test scored only 42% correct. The study examined 54 youngsters' ability to correctly place toy insects in a certain pattern based on color and type."

It is very important to encourage conversation with children and adults. Now a days parents are so busy with work, schooling, that times is so limeted. Always ask the child what they learned today? That encourages the child to re-call of thier day and share it with thier parents/family.

There is a saying ,'family who prays together stays together.' In Gujarati-there is a proverb,'when you eat together ,you flourish together' Both sayings emphasis on family structure. Where there is a healthy communication there is a healthy family. At the end of the day at the dinning table if there is a healthy conversation like,'Tommy, tell me about your school -did you sing that song? ,who made that 'frosty -the snow man?''etceteras- that will not only improve academic skills but also nourish social and emotional aspects of young child's life.
But it is sad that now a days children go home and sit in front of the t.v. watch their favorite show and eat while mothers juggle to balance their personal lives.

I always like to remind us about the PARALLEL PROCESS. If one looks closely at the styles of ADULT LEARNING, we see that showing, doing and demonstrating are the most effective methods for training adults so that they will retain and USE information. So, tell me, why do so many trainers lecture AT people rather than involve and engage them in doing?!?
"Do unto others as you want others to do unto others"!!!
